The SS Andrea Doria was an ocean liner belonging to the Italian Line based in Genoa, Italy. It is most famously known for its tragic sinking in 1956, during which 1,660 out of 1,706 passengers and crew were rescued, while 46 lost their lives. At the time, Italy was striving to rebuild its economy and reputation following World War II, and the Andrea Doria symbolized Italian national pride. The ship was the largest, fastest, and supposedly safest among all Italian vessels during that period. Launched on June 16, 1951, the Andrea Doria embarked on its maiden voyage on January 14, 1953. On July 25, 1956, while approaching the coast of Nantucket, Massachusetts, USA en route to New York City, the eastbound Stockholm of the Swedish American Line collided with the Andrea Doria, resulting in one of the most notorious maritime disasters in history.

The impact caused the top-heavy Andrea Doria to immediately tilt severely to starboard, rendering half of her lifeboats unusable. Despite this, the ship managed to remain afloat for over 11 hours after the collision, thanks to the composed and swift actions of the crew, as well as improvements in communications and the prompt response of other vessels. Ultimately, 1,660 passengers and crew were rescued, with 46 individuals perishing as a direct result of the collision. The luxury liner capsized and sank the next morning.
